Workshops

I have experience and expertise in the following subjects for writing workshops, which could be held as stand-alone events or as recurring classes, live or online.

Wordplay for Writer's Block
The intent is to break writers out of ruts and help them spawn fresh ideas, create outside their comfort zones and try new approaches. Mind maps, freewrites, "linguistic corpse," board games, puzzle making, storyboards... and much more.

Illness Narrative 101 ~ LOOK FOR THIS TO OPEN UP IN later 2016 ~
Learn how to write about chronic illness and injury in a way that is universal and accessible. For poets, fiction writers and nonfiction writers. Also includes exploration into the ethics of writing about illness as an observer or caregiver.

Magical Realism 101
Learn the basic tenets of the magical realism form, study variations in magical realist narrative, read classic magical realist authors, strive to write beyond cliche, give form and shape to the uncanny and create a magical realism toolbox to pull it all off.

Wet Dog Stories
You love your dog, but when they go out in the rain and the mud, you struggle to be around them. They smell! They leave tracks everywhere! They shake mud all over the furniture! The same happens with short stories you write that don't quite work; you still love them, but you want better for them, and you still have to live with them. For a wet dog, a trip to the beauty salon may be in order. For your Wet Dog Story, we'll find ways to strip away the smelly, muddy, tangled mess to find the beautiful, fresh and clean narrative hiding beneath.

NaNoWriMo Coach
The doctor is in! Come join me for scheduled write-ins and drop-in hours if you're taking on the challenge of National Novel Writing Month. I've completed the task three times and know some great ways to overcome the hurdles and gather the stamina necessary to get to word 50,000 before midnight November 30.
